HISTORY OF ICE'S ORGANIC FARM
Ice's Organic Farm lies in the shadow of Black Mesa next to the Rio Grande. The area known as Los Luceros was farmed by Spanish settlers as early as 1710, and by Pueblo Indians for centuries before that.
The farm, owned and worked by Ron and Gayle Ice, is just off the Taos highway, 8 miles north of Espanola.
They started farming in 1990 when they moved to the Espanola Valley. That year they rented a tractor to plow and put in a small vegetable garden. The following year they increased their planting and began taking produce to the Santa Fe Farmer’s Market.
The farming schedule starts in late fall with the planting of garlic. Spring planting begins with the planting of sugar snap peas and the cold hardy vegetables. Most of the other vegetables and flowers are planted in May.
